Dorothy may miss the Tin Man most of all, but we hold a particular fondness for the Scarecrow. Arvada will showcase scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and costume at its Annual Festival of Scarecrows on Saturday, October 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Arvada Olde Town Square. At noon, tiny ghosts and goblins march in the Costumed Kids’ Parade around Town Square. And every parade participant gets a bag of goodies. A Kiddie “Cone” Stalk Maze will be set up for the little ones (admission is FREE, but a canned food donation is appreciated for the Arvada Food Bank). Among the scheduled activities: Pumpkin Seed Spitting Contest, Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest and a Baked Pumpkin Dish Cooking Contest (no pies, please). You can register in advance for most of the contests online. The Great Pumpkin Contest starts its weigh-in at 2:30 p.m. Expect the usual food booths, face painting, animal balloons and games. Plus, everyone can vote for his or her favorite scarecrows and buy pumpkins, gourds and cornstalks. W. 57th Ave. & Olde Wadsworth.
